While I am behind in my stories and have no current inspiration for future chapters, I will be returning to those when I have free time. This drabble is a sort of reboot for my brain, to help me get back to writing. Have you come across a fic where Loki stumbles into Asgard (intentionally or otherwise I can’t quite remember) and was “kidnapped” by the Asgardians? Okay so, here’s part 2. I’m sorry that the figure skating/hockey AU that this fandom finally gets is the intermittent, unbeta’ed, lazy ramblings of a hack. Truly sorry! Anyone who thought they wanted to write a version before this should still do it.
Two things: 1) I realized going through my previous post that I identified Thor in the narrative, even though Thor did not tell Loki his first name. Fail. But I decided it was a bit rude of Thor to come on that strong and not introduce himself, so I’ve added him giving Loki his name to part 1.
2) After some thought I have decided not to cast real life figure skaters in this AU. Mostly because I want our super heroes to win, and the idea of Natasha and Clint (MUCH AS I LOVE THEM) beating out Meryl Davis and Charlie White for the world gold medal physically hurt me. Also I don’t yet know who I want to win the Olympic gold medal in the men’s event, but I sure as heck don’t want to write about Yuzuru Hanyu skating his best and getting silver. SO. All superheroes all the time.
Again this is very much inspired by this wonderful art by Viviena.
Out of all von Doom’s other students (not an unsubstantial number, von Doom really is running a factory) Loki feels the most compelled to form an alliance with Natasha Romanov. She and her partner, Clint Barton, are the reigning world gold medalists in ice dance, famous for their signature fierce perfectionism, and what some might generously call “daring” costume choices. Far more important to Loki, however, is that Natasha appears to be the only person who is not afraid of von Doom. Loki is deeply envious of the dismissive way she calls the iron-faced coach by his first name, and of how she can curse openly at him in Russian. She will do what von Doom asks of her, reach for the position he wants, up the drama, add a turn, but she’ll also tell him he’s wrong before and after she does it.
Sometimes von Doom even agrees with her.
Day two is another grueling session where von Doom sees nothing at all he likes in Loki’s skating despite his the extra practice. Afterward Loki sits tiredly on a bench in the locker room, wiping his blades down with a towel. He glances now and again in Natasha’s direction. She is standing before a mirror, pulling some of the hair that has dared to break free back into her severe bun, and has not yet said hello to him or deemed it necessary to introduce herself.
Loki clears his throat carefully as he puts down one skate and takes up the other. “You’re very brave to stand up to him.”
Natasha pauses in her work and looks at his reflection in the mirror. Her full lips spread very slowly into a smile. “It’s got nothing to do with bravery. Victor’s all bullshit and hot air.”
Loki frowns and puts down his other skate. “Then why train under him?”
Natasha turns away from the mirror and tips her head to the side, acknowledging his point. “Okay, so he’s bullshit, hot air, and a few good ideas.”
She looks at Loki for a moment and apparently decides to take pity on him. “I saw you out there on the ice.”
Loki’s fingers clench around his knee while he waits for her comment.
